Chatwoot

What it is for

Chatwoot is an open-source support inbox with Captain AI: shared conversations across live chat, email, and social, plus an assistant that answers or drafts while agents work. Use it when the job is a support desk you can self-host, not when you need a closed Intercom-only cloud.

What makes it unique: the cover is the official chatwoot/chatwoot GitHub file list — app/, bin/, MIT License in the About pane — not a marketing orb.

Key features

• Shared inbox — live chat, email, social, and (Business+) voice in one agent desk (chatwoot.com; pricing). A queue, not a model.
• Captain Assistant — a customer-facing bot on your help center that answers when you are away (pricing Captain AI). An actor, not a draft.
• Copilot / reply suggestions — one-click drafts for the human agent in the thread (pricing “Shows agents what to say”). A draft, not the bot.
• Help center — articles the Assistant reads and the Content-gap report flags (Startups+). A wiki, not a chat.
• Automation / triage — rules that label, prioritize, and route (Business+; Captain Scenarios). A job, not a reply.

Memories, summarization, and monitors sit on the same Captain path. REST API is install / SDK. Captain credits ($20 / 1,000 extra) are the meter. Self-host vs Cloud is where it runs.

Who it's for

Best fit: support teams who will pay Startups or Business so Captain credits and a help center sit above the Hacker 500-conversation cap.

Pricing

Verified 2026-10-22 (Asia/Shanghai) from chatwoot.com/pricing. Cloud per agent / month. 15-day trial.

• Hacker — $0 / agent / month. Up to 2 agents; 500 conversations / month; live chat only. No voice, Captain, help center, teams, automations, or SSO. 30-day retention.
• Startups — $19 / agent / month. Unlimited conversations*; 300 Captain credits; help center. No voice / teams / automations / SSO.
• Business — $39 / agent / month. Voice; 500 Captain credits; teams; automation rules.
• Enterprise — custom. 800 Captain credits; SSO / SAML; audit logs; 3-year retention.

FAQ: extra Captain credits $20 / 1,000. OSS / nonprofit projects can get Startups free — email hello@chatwoot.com. *Unlimited is subject to fair use. Community self-host is the inbox core; Cloud adds Captain and support.

Limitations / costs

• $19 / $39 are per-agent monthly Cloud cards. Confirm annual checkout if the page adds one.
• Hacker has no Captain. Startups is the first AI card.
• Support inbox, not a company-knowledge agent platform. For Slack/Notion agents, see Dust.

Alternatives

• Intercom Fin — closed AI support when you do not want to self-host.
• Lindy — hosted agents that are not a shared inbox.
• Activepieces — automations without a support desk.
