Move from Copilot to Cursor only after you accept the Grok-only $8 seat

Copilot Pro is $10/month plus flex credits. Cursor Plus is $8 and Grok-only. Switching editors is the real cost — export rules, keybindings, and review habits before you cancel Copilot.

OUR TAKE

Switch if you want an agent that edits the repo inside a Cursor window and you can live on Grok, or you will pay Premium $30 plus API. Stay on Copilot if the IDE and GitHub SSO are the product. Run both for one billing cycle before you cancel.

Good fit

Developers already paying Copilot who want a repo agent in an editor

Poor fit

Teams locked to JetBrains-only workflows or an org that forbids a second editor

FAQ

Is Cursor Plus cheaper than Copilot Pro?
On stickers, yes: $8 vs $10/month. Copilot Pro also lists a $5 flex bundle on the card. Cursor Plus is Grok-only; matching Claude/GPT needs Cursor Premium $30 plus API. Checked 2026-10-19.
Can I keep Copilot while I try Cursor?
Yes, and you should for at least one cycle. The switching cost is keybindings, rules, and review habits — not the $8.
What should I export before I cancel Copilot?
Custom instructions, chat history you still need, and any org policy that assumed Copilot. Recreate project rules as Cursor rules or a CLAUDE.md if you also use Claude Code.
When is Claude Code the better move instead of Cursor?
When you already pay Claude Pro/Max and want the agent in the terminal or Claude Code app without switching editors. Usage shares the Claude pool.

Switching from GitHub Copilot to Cursor is an editor change, not a model toggle. Price is the easy part. Habits are not.

Checked 2026-10-19. Copilot Pro is $10/month plus a $5 flex bundle on GitHub’s plans page. Cursor Plus is $8/month, Grok only, on cursor.com/pricing.

Do not switch yet if

  • Your org forbids a second editor or a non-GitHub vendor.
  • You live in JetBrains and Copilot-in-the-IDE is the whole product.
  • You assumed $8 includes Claude or GPT. It does not. That is Cursor Premium $30 plus API list.
  • You have not used Cursor Free long enough to hit the Agent/Chat limit.

Stay, or try Claude Code on a Claude seat if the terminal is enough. Compare Copilot vs Cursor.

Checklist (one afternoon)

  1. Name the job. If you only want inline completion, Copilot is still the smaller change. If you want apply/reject multi-file diffs in a Cursor window, continue.
  2. Accept the $8 reality. Plus = Grok. Read what $8 Cursor Plus buys.
  3. Install Cursor on one repo, not the monorepo. Copy .gitignore sense into .cursorignore.
  4. Port instructions. Copilot custom instructions → Cursor rules. If you also use Claude, keep a CLAUDE.md / AGENTS.md so you are not locked to one box.
  5. Recreate three real tasks: finish a line, explain a file, apply a multi-file patch. If Grok fails the third, price Premium $30 + API against staying on Copilot, not against hope.
  6. Keep Copilot paid for one more cycle. The switching cost is keybindings and review, not $8 vs $10.
  7. Export what you still need from Copilot chat. Then cancel one seat — not both “to save” and then buy them again.

Nearby exits (not the same move)

  • Windsurf — another editor-shaped agent. Do not add it as a third paid IDE the same week.
  • Continue — stay in the current IDE, bring your own model (including local). Useful if the problem was the model, not VS Code.
  • Claude Code — repo agent on Claude Pro $17/year billed or $20/month. No editor switch.

Open Cursor vs Claude vs ChatGPT if the real question is “editor vs assistant.”

Best for / not for

Best for: a developer already paying Copilot who wants a repo agent in a Cursor window and can live on Grok (or will pay Premium).

Not for: an org-standard JetBrains shop; a buyer who will not export rules; anyone switching because a thread said Copilot is “dead.”

After you switch

Watch the first invoice. If you immediately add Claude/GPT in Cursor, you are on Premium + API — often more than Copilot Pro. That can still be correct. It is not the $8 story. Write down the job that justified it, or switch back while Copilot still works.
