Choose an AI coding agent by the job, not the demo
Pick inline completion, an editor agent, or a repo agent first. Then match Cursor, Copilot, or Claude Code to privacy, review culture, and the real seat price.
OUR TAKE
If you want an agent to edit a real repo and show a diff, start with Cursor. Stay on GitHub Copilot if you will not leave your current IDE. Buy Claude Code only after you already want Claude for writing. Do not buy from a leaderboard clip.
Good fit
Developers choosing a first paid coding seat this quarter
Poor fit
Teams that need code to stay on-prem — start with a local stack instead
FAQ
- Is Cursor always better than Copilot in 2026?
- No. Cursor wins when you want the agent inside a VS Code-style editor with apply/reject diffs. Copilot wins when you will not switch IDEs and already live in GitHub. Checked 2026-10-19 against each public pricing page.
- Does the $8 Cursor Plus plan include Claude or GPT?
- No. Cursor Plus is $8/month and Grok models only. Claude/GPT in the editor is Premium at $30/month, and those models are billed at API list. See the $8 Cursor Plus guide.
- When should I use Claude Code instead of an editor?
- When you already pay for Claude Pro or Max and want the agent in the checkout from the terminal or Claude Code app. Usage is one pool with Claude chat. Checked 2026-10-22 on anthropic.com/pricing.
- Can I keep code on my machine?
- Hosted agents send context to the vendor. If diffs cannot leave the network, use a local stack such as Ollama plus Continue, Aider, or Cline — quality then depends on your hardware.
