What it is for

Payload is an open-source headless CMS you run in Next.js: you define a Collection in TypeScript, the Admin draws it, and the MIT license is $0. Use it when the job is content you start at $0 on your host, not when you need a $20 chat seat.

What makes it unique: the cover is the official Payload Collections admin (Users plus field-type collections) from the docs Admin still — not a pricing card. The gallery itself is ops of Collections. Payload Cloud new-project create is paused (Enterprise-only on /new); self-host is the path you can buy today.

Key features

Collections — a typed document list you define in code (Admin still; Get started). One schema. The cover cards and the Admin list are ops of this. Field types (array, blocks, upload) are options of a Collection, not extra desks.
Globals — a singleton document (header, settings), not a list (Globals docs). One record, not a Collection. Access functions on a Global are ops of Access control.
Access control — a function per create/read/update/delete (Access Control). A permission, not a document. Roles you attach here sit on this card.
Versions / drafts — a review before a document is published (Versions). A pipeline, not a Collection. Autosave and restore are ops of this.
Self-host / Cloud — the MIT app you run in Next.js, or Payload Cloud (GitHub; Cloud notice). A control plane, not a Collection. Cloud new projects are paused; do not invent a Cloud dollar.

REST, GraphQL, and Local API are install. Live preview and Lexical blocks are options of Collections. Admin theme tokens are chrome.

Who it's for

Best fit: Next.js teams who will stay on the MIT self-host at $0 while they open a first Collections admin, then keep self-hosting (or wait for whatever Figma ships next) because Payload Cloud will not create a new project for a non-Enterprise team today.

Pricing

Verified 2026-10-23 (Asia/Shanghai) from payloadcms.com/cloud-pricing, payloadcms.com/new, and the MIT LICENSE. payloadcms.com/pricing returned 404.

Open Source (self-host) — $0. MIT. You run Next.js + a database + media storage. Confirmed by the repo license and the Cloud FAQ (“Payload remains a self-hosted solution”).
Payload Cloud (existing customers) — existing projects keep running. The Cloud page says no pricing changes are currently planned for those customers. Do not invent a Cloud dollar (third-party “$35 / $199” cards are not on Payload HTML today).
Payload Cloud (new projects) — paused. payloadcms.com/new prints “Project creation is only available for Enterprise teams.”
Enterprise — demo / sales. Confirm the live quote — do not invent an Enterprise dollar.

Confirm checkout if Cloud ever reopens; taxes follow your location. Hosting, database, and CDN you buy for self-host are your bill, not a Payload SKU.

Limitations / costs

Cloud will not create a new project for you today. Self-host or Enterprise is the door.
$0 is the license, not the host. Postgres / Mongo + object storage still cost money.
Figma acquired Payload. The Cloud FAQ says you will eventually migrate; no shutdown date was printed on the page we fetched.

Strapi — OSS headless CMS when you want Strapi Cloud instead of a paused Payload Cloud.
