Jina AI is a search-foundation API desk: turn a URL into markdown, embed or rerank a pile, or let DeepSearch loop until it answers. Use it when the job is retrieval quality you meter in prepaid tokens, not when you need a vector database or a $20 chat seat.

What makes it unique: the cover is Jina’s own search.jina.ai DeepSearch composer — the official question box plus Deep Search — not a pricing card.

Key features

• Reader — prepend r.jina.ai (or GET/POST) so a URL becomes LLM-ready markdown; output tokens are the meter (Reader; API Pricing). One fetch; X-Engine / OCR / format flags sit on this call, not five products.
• Search — s.jina.ai returns a SERP already converted to LLM text; each request starts at 10,000 tokens (pricing table). A search, not a single-URL read.
• Embeddings — POST /v1/embeddings turns text or images into vectors (jina-embeddings-v4 / v5 / omni) (Embedding API). One embed; those names are SKU.
• Reranker — POST /v1/rerank scores an already-retrieved pile (Reranker API). A second pass, not a first embed.
• DeepSearch — swap api.openai.com for deepsearch.jina.ai so an agent searches, reads, and reasons until it answers (DeepSearch; search.jina.ai). A loop, not a SERP dump.

The Python/JS clients and a jina_... key are install / SDK. Tokens (shared across Reader / Search / Embed / Rerank / DeepSearch on one key) are the meter. Model names and Matryoshka dimensions are SKU.

Who it's for

Best fit: RAG and agent teams who will burn the 10 million free tokens on Reader or jina-embeddings-v4, then top up $50 for 1 billion tokens — not a team looking for a $20 chat seat.

Pricing

Verified 2026-10-22 (Asia/Shanghai) from jina.ai/api-dashboard/pricing, jina.ai/reader, and the live token-pack widget (10M free / $50 / $500). Prepaid tokens. There is no seat card.

• Toy / free key — 10 million tokens on every new API key. One-time, does not renew. Non-commercial (CC-BY-NC) on the free grant.
• Prototype — $50 once for 1 billion tokens ($0.050 / 1M). Standard key. Reader 500 RPM.
• Production — $500 once for 11 billion tokens ($0.045 / 1M). Premium key. Reader 5,000 RPM; Embed/Rerank 5,000 RPM / 50M TPM.
• Reader — bills output tokens. Keyless 20 RPM. s.jina.ai Search starts at 10,000 tokens per request.
• Embeddings / Reranker — bill input tokens. Free key: 100 RPM / 100k TPM. Paid: 500 RPM / 2M TPM.
• Auto top-up — recharge the last pack when the balance is low. The May 6, 2025 price change applies to new packs; old auto-recharge keys keep the prior rate until you edit them.

Do not invent a monthly seat. Confirm the widget at checkout; taxes and currency follow your location.

Limitations / costs

• Free 10M is non-commercial. Buy a pack for production.
• No public seat. Dollars are prepaid tokens.
• Search is not a free SERP. s.jina.ai starts at 10k tokens per call.
• An API, not a vector store. You still need Qdrant or Chroma to keep the vectors.

Alternatives

• Voyage AI — another hosted embed/rerank API when Jina’s Reader+DeepSearch stack is not the job.
• Firecrawl — a crawl-to-markdown API when you want a site map, not a single r.jina.ai URL.
• Qdrant — the store that keeps Voyage or Jina vectors next to search.
