What it is for

Inngest is a durable event runtime for functions and agents: you wrap work in step.run(), emit events, and the platform retries from the failed step. Use it when the job is event-driven durable functions you start at $0, not when you need a $20 chat seat.

What makes it unique: the cover is the official inngest/inngest Dev Server Runs table (run id, trigger, function, queued / ended) — not a pricing card. The Dev Server itself is ops, not a fifth product.

Key features

• Durable functions — wrap existing code in step.run(); Inngest saves each step, retries the failed one, and can sleep for days (Durable Execution; pricing). One run. Step count is how this is metered (a run with 5 steps is 6 executions). The CLI / SDK is install.
• Events — ingest an event that starts a function, fans out, or unblocks a wait (Events; pricing Events). A trigger, not a step. Free includes 500k/mo; Pro includes 5M then $0.50 per extra 1M.
• Sandboxes — isolated microVMs billed per second of vCPU and memory (pricing Sandboxes). A machine, not a function step. 1 vCPU is $0.000011/s; 1 GB RAM is $0.000003/s. Concurrent sandbox caps are SKU.
• Agent Evals — outcome scores on the same run so you compare a change to a workflow (Agent Evals; pricing Scores). A grade, not a retry. Free includes 10K scores; Pro 50K then $1.50 per 1K.
• Realtime — stream progress from a durable run to the user (Realtime). A socket, not a log line. Free includes 50 concurrent connections; Pro 1,000.

Flow control (concurrency, throttle) is SKU of the function. The Dev Server “Send test event” is ops. Extra seats are $10. Advanced observability / Datadog is a $300 add-on. Executions are the meter.

Best fit: teams who will stay on Free $0 (50k executions, no card) while they wrap a first agent, then buy Pro at $99/month when they need 1M executions and 7-day traces.

Limitations / costs

• Free pauses when 50k executions are gone. Pro meters overage instead.
• A step is an execution. A 5-step agent is 6 executions, not 1.
