remove.bg

What it is for

remove.bg is a signed-out background remover: the official editor still (see the cover: cutout result plus Add background / Erase/Restore / Create design / Download / Download HD) is the post-upload canvas. Use it when the job is cut a subject from one photo, not when you need a full design suite.

It is not open source. Pay-as-you-go starts at $3 for 3 credits. The first subscription card we copied is $9 / month for 40 credits. The standalone site closes 1 December 2026 (moves to Canva).

What makes it unique: the cover is remove.bg’s own editor after a cutout — Download / Erase/Restore — not the marketing uploader.

Key features

• Post-upload editor — Add background, Erase/Restore, Create design, Download / Download HD (cover).
• Preview vs credit — a 1 trial credit for AI edits; “Basics, at no cost” on the pricing page.
• Pay-as-you-go — 3 credits for $3 (dropdown on the live card). Credits expire 1 December 2026.
• Subscription — 40 credits for $9 / month on the card we captured (dropdown).
• API / plugins / bulk — named on the same pricing column.

Who it's for

Best fit: people who need a few HD cutouts before 1 December 2026 and will pay $3 or $9.

Poor fit: people who already live in Canva (the destination after shutdown) or want a brush editor that stays up.

Pricing

Verified 2026-10-21 (Asia/Shanghai) from remove.bg/pricing. Re-check before you buy. The banner on that page says the standalone site ends 1 December 2026, 9:00 AM CET.

• Trial / basics — 1 trial credit for AI edits. “Basics, at no cost.”
• Pay-as-you-go — $3 for 3 credits on the live dropdown. One-time. Credits expire on the shutdown date.
• Subscription — $9 / month for 40 credits on the live dropdown. AI photo editor, remove background, erase & restore, max-quality exports, API, bulk (Pro+).
• Canva — “Try Canva for Free” column. API pricing is pointed at Leonardo.

Higher subscription rows stay off this page unless the dropdown shows them. Do not invent $39 / $89 from third-party writeups.

Limitations / costs

• The website is shutting down 1 December 2026. Do not buy more PAYG than you will use.
• $9 is the 40-credit dropdown, not every SKU. Open the amount menu before you pay.
• HD exports spend credits. The free path is preview / basics.
• Not a design suite. After shutdown, Canva is the vendor’s own destination.

Alternatives

• Canva — the vendor’s stated home after 1 December 2026.
• Adobe Firefly — generative fill / remove inside Adobe’s public plans.
