Perplexity Comet - AI Tools Nav

What it is for

Perplexity Comet is a Chromium AI browser with a sidecar assistant: the assistant sits on the page (cover: Google Sheets + Summarize this table), answers from the open tab, and can take actions. Use it when the job is browse with Perplexity in the chrome, not when you only want Perplexity search.

The browser is free worldwide. Comet Plus is $5/mo for publisher access (included on Perplexity Pro / Max).

What makes it unique: the cover is Perplexity’s official Comet Assistant still — live spreadsheet, Summarize this table, and the Assistant pane — not a comet illustration.

Key features

Ask the open page — question or summarize the live tab (cover: Sheets + Summarize this table) (Comet).
Cross-tab research — the assistant reads and works across several open tabs at once (e.g. a sheet plus a source site) (The New Comet Assistant).
Click, fill, and navigate — watch it click, scroll, and fill forms; Stop or steer from the sidecar (Comet Assistant puts you in control).
Email and calendar — opt in to Gmail / Calendar so it can organize mail or schedule; you can revoke the connector (Privacy FAQ).
Pause before purchase or login — it asks permission before checking out or signing in (Comet Assistant puts you in control).
Background Assistants — async helpers that keep working after you leave the tab (Comet is now available).

Who it's for

Best fit: people who already use Perplexity Search and want the same assistant inside the browser.

Poor fit: teams that cannot leave Chrome, or users who only need cited search on the web app (Perplexity).

Pricing

Verified 2026-10-22 (Asia/Shanghai) from perplexity.ai/comet, Comet Plus, and the existing Perplexity Pro/Max cards. Re-check before you buy.

Comet browser — $0. Free to download worldwide (Oct 2, 2025 launch post).
Comet Plus — $5/month standalone. Included with Perplexity Pro and Max (Introducing Comet Plus).
Perplexity Pro — $17/month billed annually (monthly list is higher) on perplexity.ai/pro.
Perplexity Max — $167/month billed annually.

Comet started as a Max-only preview (July 2025) and later went free. Do not copy the old “Max-only browser” blurb.

Limitations / costs

Comet Plus is news access, not more assistant IQ. The $5 card is publisher content.
Background Assistants and Email Assistant were Max-gated on the launch post we copied — confirm the current gate.
It is still a Chromium browser. Extensions and enterprise policies may not match Chrome.
Not a replacement for Perplexity Search if you only want citations in a tab you already have.

Alternatives

Perplexity — the answer engine without installing a browser.
ChatGPT — hosted assistant; search is a tool, not the default chrome.
Dia — The Browser Company’s AI browser (Better Answers $20/mo on the FAQ; card also prints $10).
