Permit

What it is for

Permit is a hosted authorization desk: you open an Audit Log, and Community is Free Forever $0 (1,000 MAUs, 20 tenants, 25 roles, unlimited authorization queries). Use it when the job is who-can-do-what you start at $0, not when you need a $20 chat seat.

What makes it unique: the cover is the official Permit Audit Log (Sharedtodos ABAC, Decision DENIED, no_matching_rules JSON, delete on task) from the decision-log still — not a pricing card. The decision pane itself is ops of Audit logs. Paid Enterprise is Contact us on the pricing HTML we fetched — do not invent a Pro dollar (the console “Upgrade to Pro” button is not a printed $ tile).

Key features

• Policies — an RBAC / ABAC / ReBAC / PBAC graph you edit in the Policy UI (pricing Authorization Models; docs). One policy. UI / API / SDK / IaC writers are options of this, not extra desks. Community 25 roles, 50 resource types, 5 condition sets.
• Tenants — a customer box you isolate (pricing Tenants). A box, not a policy. Community 20. “No limits on MAU and Tenants” prints on the Enterprise extras list, not as a sixth desk.
• PDP — an authorization microservice that answers Check / BulkCheck (pricing Unlimited Authorization Microservices). A runtime, not a policy. Community prints No Limit PDP instances. The check itself is this card.
• Audit logs — a decision you inspect after a Check (decision-log still; docs). One decision. Cover TIMESTAMP / USER / ACTION / RESOURCE rows and the DENIED JSON reason are ops of this. Replay and logs-forwarder sit here.
• Elements — an embeddable user-management / audit widget you drop into your app (pricing Embeddable Authorization Interfaces). A widget, not a log. Cover sidebar Elements is this card.

SDKs, the Terraform provider, and Git policy sync are install. Projects / Environments (Community 3 environments) are ops of Policies. MAUs are the meter, not a desk.

Who it's for

Best fit: SaaS teams who will stay on Community at $0 (1,000 MAUs, 20 tenants) while they open a first Audit Log, then talk to Permit when they need unlimited MAUs, on-prem, or a 99.99% SLA — because the public page does not print a self-serve paid dollar.

Pricing

Verified 2026-10-23 (Asia/Shanghai) from permit.io/pricing. The page prints Free Forever for Community and Contact Us for Enterprise. No paid dollar appeared in the HTML we fetched.

• Community — Free Forever $0. 1,000 MAUs. 20 tenants. No limit on authorization queries. 25 roles. 50 resource types. 5 condition sets. 2,000 role assignments / resource instances / relationship tuples. 20 groups. 3 environments. Unlimited projects. RBAC / ABAC / ReBAC / PBAC, Policy UI, Cloud Console, unlimited PDPs, single region. Basic Slack support.
• Enterprise — Contact us. The extras list prints no MAU/tenant limits, dedicated CSM, SOC 2 / HIPAA BAA / GDPR / CCPA, multi-cloud and on-prem, professional services, 99.99% SLA. Do not invent an Enterprise dollar.
• OSS projects — “full power of Permit’s Startup tier” by contact, if you qualify. Do not invent a Startup $.

Confirm the live quote; taxes follow your location.

Limitations / costs

• Free is 1,000 MAUs and 20 tenants. A busier multi-tenant SaaS is a quote.
• Paid dollars are not printed. Treat Pro / Startup / Enterprise as contact, not a self-serve $ tile.
• An authorization desk, not a login box. For sign-in components see Clerk. For a $0 OSS PDP you run yourself see Cerbos.

Alternatives

• Cerbos — OSS PDP when you will write YAML policies and run the binary, not open a Permit Audit Log.
• Clerk — hosted sign-in when the job is authentication UI, not Permit’s who-can-do-what graph.
• FusionAuth — downloadable identity when you want users + login, not a dedicated authorization console.
