Novelcrafter

What it is for

Novelcrafter is a fiction workspace with a Codex and optional AI: plan in Grid / Matrix / Outline, keep characters and lore in a wiki, then generate from scene beats or chat the scene. Use it when the job is write a novel you already outlined, not when you need a journal-English overlay.

What makes it unique: the cover is Novelcrafter’s own features still — Chat with your Scene, Context Options, and Extract from Chat — not a wordmark.

Key features

• Codex — characters, places, lore, relations, progressions, and mentions in one wiki; share it across a series (features “Story Bible”; homepage Codex). A world database, not a paragraph.
• Planning views — Grid (drag acts/chapters/scenes), Matrix, Outline, and a marker timeline. Those views are one planning surface.
• Scene beats → draft — you write what should happen; the model writes the scene (features “Scene Beats”; pricing “Generate from Scene Beats” from Hobbyist). A generate job. Scene summarization / character extraction are the same AI-on-scene stream.
• Workshop / scene chat — chat the open scene, pick context (outline / scene / full novel), extract beats or Codex entries back out (features “Chat with your Scene”). Revise in conversation, not a beat generate.
• Collaboration — invite a viewer/editor, or create teams on Specialist (pricing collaboration table). People, not a model.

BYOK / OpenRouter / Ollama / LM Studio are the same model pipe. Prompt components and parameter knobs are editor chrome. Book counts and “unlimited books” are SKU.

Who it's for

Best fit: novelists who will pay Hobbyist so BYOK scene generation sits on a Codex they already keep.

Pricing

Verified 2026-10-22 (Asia/Shanghai) from novelcrafter.com/pricing. Cards printed USD. 21-day trial, all features, no card. No permanent Free plan.

• Scribe — $4/month. Unlimited books; Codex; series; basic review. No BYOK.
• Hobbyist — $8/month. BYOK; scene summarization; character extraction; generate from scene beats.
• Artisan — $14/month. Workshop chat; advanced review (listed as planned on the table).
• Specialist — $20/month. Invite others to novels/series; create and manage teams; priority support.

Yearly billing exists on the page; the cards we copied are the monthly dollars above. Do not invent a yearly equivalent. Collaborators who edit need their own paid plan; viewers can use a free account (pricing FAQ).

Limitations / costs

• No Free plan. Trial is 21 days, then a paid card.
• Scribe has no AI key. Hobbyist is the first BYOK card.
• Workshop chat starts on Artisan ($14).
• Fiction workspace, not an academic editor. For journal English, see Paperpal or Yomu.

Alternatives

• Sudowrite — fiction generate/rewrite without a Codex wiki.
• Yomu — citation-backed academic editor.
• Jasper — marketing writer when the job is ads, not a novel.
