Kap - AI Tools Nav

What it is for

Kap is an open-source macOS screen recorder: you trim a timeline (0:08:12) and export GIF / MP4, and the app is Free. Use it when the job is a short capture you start at $0, not when you need Screen Studio’s auto-zoom polish only.

Soft-note: $0 MIT (wulkano/Kap). macOS 12+; Apple silicon and Intel builds. Distinct from Screen Studio, Loom, and Descript.

What makes it unique: the cover is Kap’s official export window (Kapture2018-12-12at09.41.00.mp4, playhead 0:08:12 (0:32:24), Size 7680 × 4320, FPS 30, Destination GIF, Copy to Clipboard, Export) — not a wordmark. The 7680 × 4320 row itself is ops of Size.

Key features

Timeline trim — the playhead + duration chip (cover still; getkap.co). One desk. Cover 0:08:12 sits here.
Size — 7680 × 4320 (cover). An export size, not a paid tile.
FPS — 30 (cover). A frame rate, not a $0 meter.
Destination GIF — the format picker (cover; homepage also names MP4 / WebM / APNG). A format, not Get Started.
Copy to Clipboard — the share control (cover). A copy, not Enterprise.
Export — the right-hand commit (cover). Export, not a Cloud SKU.

Download / Get Kap are CTAs (not desks). There is no paid tile.

Who it's for

Best fit: Mac makers who will stay on MIT Kap at $0 while they trim a first GIF — not Screen Studio Yearly $9 unless they need auto zooms, and not a Windows recorder (there isn’t one).

Pricing

Verified 2026-10-23 (Asia/Shanghai) from getkap.co and wulkano/Kap. Soft-note: MIT, no paid desk.

Kap — Free ($0). MIT. Apple silicon and Intel downloads, or brew install --cask kap.
Plugins — community export targets (Giphy / Streamable, etc.) stay free; they are not a Pro SKU.

Confirm you download from getkap.co or the GitHub releases.

Limitations / costs

macOS only. There is no Windows / Linux app.
Latest GitHub release is 3.6.0 (2022). It still runs; new releases have been rare — treat that as a maintenance risk, not a hidden $.
A local export desk, not Screen Studio’s auto-zoom timeline. For that recorder see Screen Studio.
We did not find a first-party YouTube how-to. Searched @getkap / @KapApp / @wulkano / @kap; no oEmbed we can attribute to Wulkano.

Alternatives

Screen Studio — a Mac recorder when you want Yearly $9/mo auto zooms, not Kap’s 7680 × 4320 GIF export.
Loom — an async bubble when you want Starter free / Business $18/user, not a menu-bar trimmer.
Descript — a transcript cut when you want Free $0 / Hobbyist $16, not Destination GIF.

Official tutorial

We searched @getkap, @KapApp, @wulkano, and @kap for a Wulkano / Kap product channel. None produced an oEmbed we can attribute to Kap. Use the written How To Use Kap on the README (menu-bar record → Option-click pause → export). We do not embed third-party Kap walkthroughs as official.
