Hex

What it is for

Hex is an agentic analytics notebook: SQL and Python cells share a project, you publish an app, and the Hex agent spends credits to write the next cell. Use it when the job is trusted exploration you later ship as a data app, not when you need a $20 chat seat.

What makes it unique: the cover is the official Hex docs page Develop your notebook — the Notebook view (SQL/Python cells, App builder, Publish) — not a pricing card.

Key features

• Notebook — SQL and Python cells on one canvas that query a warehouse, CSV, or API (Develop your notebook; pricing). One analysis. Cell types are modes of this.
• Published apps — the same project shipped as an interactive app (Community / Professional: 5; Team: unlimited) (pricing). A share surface, not a cell.
• Hex agent — the in-project agent that writes and edits cells against a credit grant (pricing “Hex agent”). A generate. Community is a trial of this; paid plans include Standard / Extended credits.
• Scheduled runs & alerts — Team clock that refreshes a project and pings you (same pricing). A cron, not a notebook edit.
• Data connections — warehouse / file / API sources the project attaches (pricing Data). A pipe, not a cell. OAuth database connections are Enterprise SKU of this.

Compute profiles (XS–4XL, GPU) are SKU of the notebook. Credits are the meter. The MCP server / SDK is install. “Run cell” is ops.

Who it's for

Best fit: solo analysts who will stay on Community $0 (small compute, agent trial), then buy Professional at $36/Editor/month when they need Medium compute, Standard agent credits, and 30-day history.

Pricing

Verified 2026-10-22 (Asia/Shanghai) from hex.tech/pricing. Editor seats. Team trial is 14 days, no card; a 30-day Team trial is also offered from the pricing page.

• Community — $0. Hex agent trial. Any data source. All cell types. Small compute. 5 published apps. 7-day history. Up to 3 shared collections / components.
• Professional — $36/Editor/month. Standard credits. 5 published apps. 30-day history. Medium compute. Email support.
• Team — $75/Editor/month. 14-day free trial. Extended credits. Unlimited apps. Visual exploration. Unlimited history. Scheduled runs and alerts. Shared components / collections. Advanced compute add-ons.
• Enterprise — custom. Explorer seats, audit logs, Premium credits, OAuth DB connections, Observability API, OIDC SSO, BYOK, single-tenant / HIPAA / embed add-ons.
• Compute add-ons (paid) — Large $0.32/hour, XL $0.65, 2XL $1.29, 4XL $2.58, A10G GPU $4.06, L4 GPU $2.93 (per-minute). XS / Small / Medium are free on paid plans.

Students and educators can get Professional free via support@hex.tech. Cancel from Settings → Manage Plan; access lasts through the period. Confirm checkout; taxes follow your location.

Limitations / costs

• Community is Small compute and an agent trial. Standard credits start at Professional.
• $36 / $75 are Editor seats. Explorer is an Enterprise add-on.
• A notebook, not a warehouse. For cloud DuckDB see MotherDuck. For a context layer on SQL you already run see Wren AI.

Alternatives

• Wren AI — governed text-to-SQL when you do not want a Hex cell canvas.
• NotebookLM — document briefing when the job is not a warehouse.
• MotherDuck — serverless DuckDB when the notebook is optional.
