Gel

What it is for

Gel (formerly EdgeDB) is a hosted graph-relational desk: you open a Cloud instance, and Free is $0 / month. Use it when the job is a schema-plus-query instance you start at $0, not when you need a $20 chat seat.

What makes it unique: the cover is the official Gel Cloud instance dashboard (example PRO TIER, aws-us-west-2, 1 compute unit / 2 GiB RAM / 10 GiB storage, Queries + storage charts, edgedb / _example databases) from the Cloud still — not a pricing card. The gauges themselves are ops of a Cloud instance. Gel bills compute units + GiB, not a chat seat.

Key features

• Cloud instances — a hosted Gel you size by compute unit (cover still; pricing; Cloud). One instance. Cover region, RAM, and Queries/min are ops of this. Free is $0 / month (1/4 CU, 1/2 GiB RAM, 1/16 vCPU, 1 GB disk).
• Data editor — a typed object table you insert and expand (data-editor still). A row, not an instance. Cover-adjacent Movie / Person rows sit here. 28-item tables are this desk.
• Query REPL — an EdgeQL prompt with a result pane (REPL still; UI video). A query, not a table edit. analyze select Movie and 0.6 ms timings sit here.
• Schema — SDL plus a type graph you edit in split view (schema still). A type, not a query. Movie extending Content and Person links are this desk.
• Self-host — Apache-2.0 Gel you run yourself (repo). A deploy, not a Cloud instance. Cloud Free is the hosted $0 tile; self-host is $0 on your metal.

edgedb migrate and the CLI are install. Getting Started checklists and Change compute buttons are ops of Cloud instances. Gel Auth / AI helpers are SKU / generate-on-schema, not a sixth desk.

Who it's for

Best fit: app teams who will stay on Cloud Free at $0 / month (1/4 compute unit, 1 GB disk) while they open a first instance dashboard, then buy Pro at $19.50 / month when they need 1 GiB RAM, 10 GiB storage, and email support.

Pricing

Verified 2026-10-23 (Asia/Shanghai) from geldata.com/pricing. Tiles print free $0 / month / pro starts at $19.50 / month / enterprise custom. Dollars are USD for aws-us-east-2.

• Free — $0 / month. 1/4 compute unit (1/2 GiB RAM, 1/16 vCPU). Up to 1 GB disk. Encryption at rest. Community support.
• Pro — starts $19.50 / month. 1/2 compute unit (1 GiB RAM, 1/8 vCPU). 10 GiB storage then $0.50 / GiB. 100 GiB transfer then $0.10 / GiB. Unlimited reads/writes. Email support.
• Enterprise — Custom. Deploy in your AWS account. Volume discounts. Do not invent an Enterprise dollar.

Confirm checkout; taxes follow your location.

Limitations / costs

• Free is 1/4 compute unit and 1 GB disk. A production 1 GiB RAM instance is the $19.50 / month Pro floor.
• Storage over 10 GiB on Pro is $0.50 / GiB. Transfer over 100 GiB is $0.10 / GiB.
• A graph-relational desk, not a serverless Postgres you branch. For Neon’s CU-hour tiles see Neon. For PlanetScale’s Vitess shards see PlanetScale.

Alternatives

• Neon — serverless Postgres when you want CU-hours and branches, not Gel’s EdgeQL schema desk.
• PlanetScale — Vitess MySQL when you want a shard/branch workflow, not a graph-relational type graph.
• SurrealDB — multi-model when you want SurrealQL documents + graphs, not Gel Cloud compute units.
