A minimal local stack is Ollama (or llama.cpp) for models plus Open WebUI for chat — add RAG and agents only after the base loop is stable.
2026/10/11
A working self-hosted LLM stack in 2026 is three layers: runtime → chat UI → optional tools. Start with the first two; skip agents until you can chat reliably offline.
If you need raw speed on Linux or custom quantizations, run llama.cpp / a compatible server instead of Ollama — same mental model, more knobs.
| Hardware | Realistic use |
|---|---|
| 8–12 GB VRAM | 7–8B Q4 chat; light coding help |
| 16–24 GB | Comfortable 14–32B; some vision models |
| CPU-only | Slow but usable for drafting; not for agent loops |
“Self-host” does not mean “frontier quality for free.” It means control and cost predictability.

Model cards and licenses differ. Treat every weights download like a dependency: check license, training data claims, and evals that match your tasks.
